Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

Welcome to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. Upon arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, meet your Steppe Elite Travel guide and transfer to your hotel. After lunch, enjoy a leisurely walk around Sukhbaatar Square, the heart of the city, followed by a visit to the Chinggis Khaan National Museum to discover Mongolia’s history and the legacy of Chinggis Khaan.

Baga Gazriin Chuluu

After breakfast, drive to Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a spectacular granite landscape in the Middle Gobi. Stop for lunch in Delger Tsogt and continue to explore the impressive rock formations, the ruins of a solitary monk’s monastery, and the surrounding wildlife and birdlife.

Tsagaan Suvarga & Del Mountain

Continue through the vast landscapes of Dundgovi Province to Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa), a spectacular geological formation shaped by millions of years of erosion and once covered by an ancient sea. After exploring the colorful cliffs, continue to Del Mountain to see thousands of ancient rock paintings dating from the Bronze Age to the medieval period.

Yol Valley – Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park

Travel to Yol Valley, also known as Eagle Valley, in Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. After a stop in Dalanzadgad for lunch and a museum visit, enjoy a scenic hike through the dramatic valley, surrounded by towering cliffs, streams, wildflowers, and diverse wildlife. With some luck, you may spot Siberian ibex and wild sheep on the rocky slopes.

Khongor Sand Dunes & Camel Experience

Travel deeper into the Gobi toward the magnificent Khongor Sand Dunes. Visit a local camel-breeding family to experience their traditional nomadic lifestyle and enjoy an optional camel ride. Later, climb the famous “Singing Dunes” and enjoy spectacular panoramic views and a beautiful Gobi sunset.

Bayanzag – Flaming Cliffs

Continue to Bayanzag, the famous Flaming Cliffs, renowned for its spectacular red sandstone formations and important dinosaur discoveries. Visit the local museum and learn about the expeditions of Roy Chapman Andrews, then explore the cliffs and surrounding saxaul forest on foot.

Ongi Steppe – Sangiin Dalai Lake

Travel across the vast Ongi Steppe and visit a local nomadic family to experience their traditional lifestyle and enjoy lunch. Continue to Sangiin Dalai Lake, where you can observe birds, enjoy the peaceful landscape and watch the sunset. In the evening, enjoy a Mongolian barbecue by the campfire, followed by stargazing beside the lake.

Orkhon Valley & Orkhon Waterfall

Continue to the Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important center of Mongolia’s nomadic history. Hike to the spectacular Orkhon Waterfall and enjoy the scenery along the Orkhon River. Later, visit a yak-breeding family and experience traditional dairy production and Mongolian nomadic hospitality.

Karakorum & Erdene Zuu Monastery

Travel to Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire. Visit the Karakorum Museum to learn about the history of the ancient city, followed by Erdene Zuu Buddhist Monastery, one of Mongolia’s oldest surviving Buddhist monastery complexes. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and, if available, experience traditional Buddhist chanting.

Small Gobi – Ulaanbaatar & Cultural Show

Begin the journey back to Ulaanbaatar, stopping at the Small Gobi near Burd soum to enjoy its sand dunes and steppe scenery. After lunch, continue to the capital and attend a traditional Mongolian cultural performance featuring music, dancing, contortion, and throat singing (khoomei). Transfer to your hotel after the show.

What kind of accommodation for this trip?

You will stay in a good 4-star hotel in Ulaanbaatar. An upgrade is possible on request!

During the excursion in the countryside, you will stay in a Tourist Ger camp, which is a kind of hotel that serves customers with a ger (yurt) instead of a hotel room and is always located at the best viewing spot. It is the most popular accommodation type for a countryside trip in Mongolia and consists of 30–40 yurts, a restaurant and facilities. Most visitors are happy to stay in a ger, which provides an authentic taste of Mongolian culture and adventure, their most enjoyable experience in Mongolia.

What about the meals?

During your trip in Mongolia, you will be served mainly European dishes and sometimes authentic Mongolian foods. Lunch and dinner consist of 3–4 courses (soup and/or salad, main course, dessert) and bottled water.

If you require special meals due to religious or medical limitations, or vegetarian food, please inform us so that arrangements can be made in advance.

What about the transport and road conditions for this trip?

Car: A good car is an important part of your comfortable trip in Mongolia. There will be a good 4×4 car for this trip based on the number of people in your group.

Road: The asphalted roads are 40% and the unpaved roads are 60%.

During the trip, it takes approximately 2–6 hours of driving (80–280 km) from one destination to the next, depending on road and weather conditions on each driving day. This is not a nonstop drive! We can take frequent short stops along the road for photographs, toilets, stretching and meeting local nomads.

The best time to do this journey?

1st best months: June, July and August.

2nd best months: May and September.

Personal things you should bring with you

Hiking boots and sandals, waterproof jacket, raincoat, umbrella, sunglasses, hat, comfortable shoes, insect repellent, sunscreen and prescription medication (if required).

Gear: Camera, binoculars, flashlight and travel lamp. Some Tourist camps do not have 24-hour electricity. It is therefore recommended to bring your own travel lamp!
